Surfside
Nantucket, Massachusetts
Residential
On the coast of Nantucket, a once unassuming summer cottage has been stripped back, reimagined, and refined—a place where intentional minimalism meets quiet luxury. This full gut renovation transformed an unconditioned seasonal outbuilding into a highly curated, year-round retreat, where every detail fosters simplicity, relaxation, and a sense of escape.
Guided by the principle that less is more, the design removes excess while elevating essentials:
No upper cabinets in the kitchen maintain openness and ease.
No island seating prioritizes connection at a shared dining table.
A limited, tonal palette creates a sense of balance and spaciousness.
Peter Dunham drapery in the bunk room adds a handcrafted touch.
To bridge past and present, we refinished the original wide-plank pine floors, stripping them of their characteristic Nantucket amber tones and achieving a modern, French white oak look. The exposed trusses, painted in a bold contrast color, add a loft-like airiness, while a mounted surfboard serves as a sculptural thesis statement—a nod to the cottage’s coastal roots.
The pared-back materials palette is warmed by hand-painted linen shades from a Turkish fabric mill, Fireclay tile accents, and classic Farrow & Ball hues. Modern amenities, including Blue Star appliances sourced from Pennsylvania, a concealed pantry, and custom-built storage solutions, bring the project into the present without disrupting its essence. Every plate, pan, and textile is hand-selected, ensuring that even the smallest details feel intentional.
This surfside sanctuary melts away the noise of the everyday. Now the most sought-after guest house on the property, it’s a space where time slows, distractions fade, and relaxation takes over.
