Forsythia

Forsythia

Old City, Philadelphia
Commercial

In the heart of Old City, Forsythia reimagines the French bistro through a modern lens. Designed for intimacy, warmth, and lively conversation, it’s the kind of place where a first date turns into a lifelong love story.

With a fast-tracked timeline and lean budget, every detail had to maximize impact:

  • Handmade zellij tile, sourced from Mosaic House.

  • A sculptural globe pendant installation by Cedar & Moss.

  • Custom booths, upholstered in a French fabric, paired seamlessly with off-the-shelf furniture from CB2 and West Elm.

  • Acoustical batting and exposed beams that ensure the restaurant maintains its energy without overwhelming noise.

The most unexpected design moment came during demolition—original plaster walls, aged with water stains and exposed lath, were uncovered beneath drywall. Rather than cover them up, we embraced their imperfections, letting the organic patina of time become a defining feature of the space.

Additional layers of texture and history include:

  • William Morris wallpaper, sealed with a matte lacquer for durability.

  • A curated mix of original artwork and Hilma af Klint reproductions.

  • Floating electrical conduit, adding an industrial yet intentional aesthetic.

Forsythia has since become one of Philadelphia’s most beloved dining destinations, earning accolades like:

  • Best First Date Restaurant – Bon Appétit

  • Top 25 Restaurants in Philadelphia (five years running)

A restaurant where every detail tells a story—of craftsmanship, character, and connection.
